Why Classical Music is Important?
Sir Roger Scruton has written extensively about the importance of classical music in his book Music: A Philosophical Inquiry.
He explains that the purpose of classical music is to help us cultivate certain virtues, including those of humility, generosity, selflessness, and love.
These are qualities we might want to develop even if we don’t listen to classical music. In fact, he argues, listening to classical music makes us better people because it trains us to appreciate beauty and to understand what it means to live well.
In addition to being good for us, classical music is also good for society. For example, he says, it can help us become aware of the value of other cultures and traditions. And it can help us see ourselves as part of a larger whole.
But here we touch the real problem which is ignored in these attempts: the real nature of the art form is its interiority.
Why Classical Music is Important: Conservatism and the Conservatory
The second reason why classical music matters is that it is conservative. It does not change over time. It is rooted in tradition and culture.
As Sir Roger puts it, “Classical music is conservative because its roots lie deep in the past. Its forms have been shaped by the great masters who came before them; they are not subject to the whims of fashion or the fads of popular taste.
Since music education stimulates your emotional and cognitive abilities, it can allow our brain to think in new and different ways.
Why Classical Music is Important: The Music of Love
Revolution is the name of a band. And it’s also the name of a song. And it’ll probably always be those things. But it’s also a word that describes something else entirely. A movement. An idea. A philosophy. A way of thinking about the world. A set of beliefs. A lifestyle. A culture. A state of mind. A way of being.
Counterpoint and Why It Matters
In music, counterpoint is the art of combining different musical ideas into one unified whole. In literature, it’s the technique of rhyming words together to make a poem sound harmonious. And in marketing, it’s how you combine multiple messages into one cohesive message.
The problem with many companies is that they don’t understand what counterpoint really is. They think that it’s just about making sure that everything in a campaign is consistent. But that’s not true. You need to use counterpoint to connect disparate elements within your campaigns. For example, let’s say you want to promote a product called “the best car ever.” If you simply list out all the features of the car, you won’t achieve anything because people are too busy reading the list to actually remember the benefits of buying the car. Instead, you could write something like this:
• Best Car Ever – Built tough enough to survive a crash.
• Highest quality parts.
• Engineered to last.
• Superb performance.
• Great looks.
The Red Roots of Folk Music
In his book “Folklore and Tradition in Modern Ireland,” published in 1975, Seamus Ennis argued that the Irish tradition had been shaped by the influence of the British Isles, particularly England. He wrote that the traditional music of Ireland was “a composite of English and Scottish elements,” and that it was “the product of a process of assimilation rather than one of isolation.”
This view was challenged by some scholars, including Ewan MacColl, who believed that the Irish tradition was rooted in the ancient Gaelic culture of pre-Christian times. But even those who accepted Ennis’ thesis did not deny the role played by the British Isles in shaping Irish musical life.
However, there are signs that attitudes towards the indigenous traditions of the island are changing. In recent years, musicians such as Dervish Owens, Moya Brennan, and Patrick O’Connell have explored the rich heritage of Irish traditional music.
And in 2017, the BBC commissioned a documentary called “Celtic Connections,” which examined how the Celtic diaspora, including Irish emigrants, influenced the development of contemporary music across the world.
